Mouse vs. Rat Droppings: What’s the Difference?
Compare the usual size and pattern of mouse and rat droppings and learn when an inspection is the safer next step.

At a glance
What to Know First
Mouse droppings are generally much smaller and pointed, while rat droppings are larger and capsule-shaped. Size, quantity and location all matter, and old droppings alone cannot show whether activity is current.

Do not rely on one dropping
Crushed material, insect debris and droppings from other animals can be confused with rodent evidence. A group of intact samples and nearby gnawing or tracks provide better context.

Clean carefully
Avoid sweeping or vacuuming dry rodent waste. Follow current CDC guidance for ventilating, wetting and disinfecting affected areas, and use appropriate protective equipment.

Use the location as a clue
Droppings concentrated behind an appliance, in an attic or near stored food can help an inspector understand likely travel and nesting areas.
