How Are Mice Getting Into My House?
Learn where mice commonly enter homes, what signs help locate a route and why removing one mouse may not solve the underlying problem.

At a glance
What to Know First
Mice often enter through small gaps around doors, utility lines, foundations, garages and roof transitions. The best clue is not always the hole itself. It is the pattern of droppings, gnawing and activity inside.

Start with the activity indoors
Droppings along a wall, sounds near one ceiling area or damaged packages in a particular cabinet can help narrow the route. Mice usually travel close to cover instead of crossing open rooms without a reason.
- Note where evidence appears first.
- Check behind appliances and stored items.
- Look for rub marks and repeated travel along edges.

Common access areas
Exterior doors, garage seals, pipe penetrations, cable openings and foundation transitions deserve inspection. Upper-level openings also matter because mice can use attached structures and rough surfaces to reach them.

Why timing matters
Closing an opening without understanding current activity can leave rodents trapped inside. Control and access recommendations should be coordinated based on the inspection.
